Avoiding Landfill and Incineration

The use of landfill for waste management is a finite option.

Unfortunately, the UK government seems more committed to incinerating than recycling. Incineration encourages more waste as they need a minimum about of rubbish to operate.

Landfill Tax has increased the cost of disposal and will continue to do so until the UK is brought in line with European levels (an increase from £21 to £35 per tonne over the next 5 years).

The environmental impacts of landfilling material are significant (methane gas – which makes a significant contribution to climate change - and leachate).

The Landfill Directive (European Legislation) will require the UK to reduce the level of biodegradable waste sent to landfill by 2010 to 75% of the 1995 waste figure.

Proximity Principle: we need to be dealing with waste as close to the source of production as possible thereby minimising transportation (and its associated pollution) and achieving self-reliance.
